This photo of the Flatiron building under construction was taken c1902. It was the tallest building when it was completed at 20 floors high. It takes it's name from the triangular shape of a 'flat iron'. It looks tall in this early photo, now it's a small but elegant old man amidst the modern upstarts of contemporary NYC. The tray has a map of downtown manhattan and the shelf is edged with perforated aluminum.
